PRESS RELEASE

The Tang Ting Twinning Association rounded off a busy year of fundraising in style, celebrating Diwali (the Hindu festival of light) with a Quiz Night held, by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Gale, at Sibbards Farm, Debden Green.

On arrival, guests were greeted by two traditionally dressed Nepalese women and handed a cut flower and silk scarf (a traditional Nepalese greeting) before moving through to the bar area where the sight of hundreds of fairy lights greeted them.

The quiz provided guests with an amusing mixture of trivia and questions and made for much good-hearted debate and puzzlement at times.

Guests enjoyed authentic Nepalese curry prepared by Mrs Tarka Gurung or fish and chips, followed by a dazzling display of traditional Nepalese dancing.  The event was organised by TTTA Chairman Moray Bayliss and raised a staggering £1,000 which will provide much needed funds to help renovate the lower village which was devastated by the landslide and floods earlier this year.

Tina Knight, District Cllr for Debden and Wimbish Wards said “We are grateful for the donations and continued support not just from the villages but from local businesses and people in the area.  We hope to continue our work on behalf of the community in Tang Ting in the New Year and look forward to seeing our supporters at our Christmas Party to be held at Carver Barracks Village Hall on Wednesday 8th December at 7.45 pm – admission free.”

Notes to Editors

The Nepalese village of Tang Ting twinned with Debden and Wimbish on 12th May 2007 in a ceremony at Carver Barracks attended by the Nepalese Ambassador, who joined villagers in signing a twinning charter.   Gurkhas from Tang Ting are part of the 33 Royal Engineer Regiment based at Carver Barracks.

The Tang Ting Twinning Association aims to promote friendship and co-operation between the communities of Debden, Debden Green and Wimbish and Tang Ting in Nepal, to the benefit of all of our citizens.   Since its inception the charity has raised funds to build a Day Care Centre for fifty children while their parents are out in the paddy fields.   A welfare fund has also been set up for the sick, disabled and poor providing essential medical supplies for the village.

The charity holds regular fundraising events and sells handmade goods from Tang Ting at the monthly Farmer’s Market held Debden Antiques on the first Saturday of the month.

Tina Knight is District Councillor for Debden and Wimbish.
